How to take care of yourself when you have osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis is a disease in which the body's bone density and mass decrease. This causes bones to deteriorate, become brittle, deformed, and break easily. This makes it impossible to move normally and if there is a fracture of an important bone such as the spine, it may press on the nearby spinal cord. Therefore, it affects movement and may cause disability.

Causes that cause osteoporosis

-Not getting enough calcium, especially during childhood and adolescence, when bone density should be the greatest.

-Causes due to heredity if family members such as grandparents have clear symptoms of osteoporosis. The chance that your child will have osteoporosis is as high as 80%. The remaining 20% depends on diet and exercise.

-Smoking and drinking alcohol regularly will reduce the efficiency of calcium absorption in the body, causing bone deterioration.

-Drinking a lot of coffee or beverages containing caffeine such as Coke, tea, etc., makes bones deteriorate more easily.

-Estrogen decreases, which is a normal condition of postmenopausal women. This causes the efficiency of calcium absorption in the body to decrease.

-Low calcium intake in old age. It will cause the absorption of calcium in the body to decrease.

-Not moving or exercising. This makes osteoporosis symptoms more severe in old age.

-Taking certain drugs such as Ortisone, steroids, anticonvulsants, antacids, etc., will reduce bone density. Which can lead to osteoporosis.

-Radiation treatment or giving chemicals. This causes the destruction of bone cells, which leads to osteoporosis.

-Lack of vitamin D because vitamin D helps in absorbing calcium effectively.

What symptoms do patients with osteoporosis have?

- Reduced height or a slouched back in the elderly. Reduced height may be caused by osteoporosis. This causes some vertebrae to collapse, affecting height without pain.

-Lower back pain from the collapse of the spine

-Bones break easily, especially in the case of accidents or falls. The most common places where fractures occur are related to falls, such as the wrists (trying to support the body while falling), hips (places that are frequently hit), and the spine.

Taking care of yourself

-Be careful about falls because we have osteoporosis. If we fall even a little we might break a bone.

-We may need to expose ourselves to sunlight because sunlight helps our bodies naturally synthesize vitamin D. Vitamin D helps calcium from the food we eat or supplements we take absorb into the bloodstream better. The suggestion is that we may have to see the sunshine one day for about 15 minutes. It is mild sunshine. You may choose to be in the morning or evening.

-Exercise according to age. Exercises that will help increase bone mass. It must be exercise that puts weight on the joints, such as brisk walking, jogging, or aerobic dancing for the elderly to help increase bone mass. Makes bone mass stronger In addition to exercise helping with bone mass, it will also help with good muscle performance. The fitness of muscles, tendons, and joints will be good and will help prevent falls in another way.
