Tendonitis in the wrist or De Quervain's Tenosynovitis is a disease caused by inflammation of the tendon sheath and tendons in the wrist at the base of the thumb. This results in compression of the internal tendons, causing pain and swelling at the base of the thumb.

Causes of De Quervain's Tenosynovitis

Caused by using the hand or wrist in an inappropriate position or manner for a long period of time, having congenital diseases such as diabetes, rheumatoid disease, and thyroid hormone deficiency. These congenital diseases will reduce blood flow to the peripheral nerves or tendons, causing the tendons to easily become frayed and inflamed.

Risk factors for sheath disease wrist tendonitis

-Age 30-50 years

- Congenital diseases such as diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, thyroid hormone deficiency

- Pregnant

- Found in females more than males.

- Using a computer or mobile phone for a long time

- Occupations that require manual work, such as housewives, carpenters, and cooks

- Play sports such as badminton, tennis, ping pong.




Symptoms of tendinitis in the wrist

- Difficulty moving wrists and fingers

- Pain when moving your wrist or using your hand to grab things.

- Swelling, redness, and heat at the base of the thumb.

- There may be pain radiating down to the fingertips or up to the elbow.

- There may be numbness in the thumb and base of the thumb.

- A lump may be felt on the thumb side of the wrist.

- Pain when pressing under the wrist joint

Initial treatment

Take a break is the first and most important piece of advice.

- Soak in warm water 1-2 times a day, 15-30 minutes each time. After soaking in warm water, do physical therapy.

- Physical therapy to relieve symptoms aims to reduce pain, reduce inflammation, and make the tendon move better.

- Take anti-inflammatory medicine to relieve pain and reduce swelling and inflammation of tendons

- Prevention of tendonitis and tendon sheath in the wrist

- The most important thing is to avoid use of the wrist that results in injury.

- For housewives who have to do housework and use their wrists regularly. Try adjusting your usage methods to reduce wrist use, such as avoiding washing and wringing clothes by hand.

- Mothers who regularly carry babies should adjust their posture by squatting down to lift the spoon from the bottom and back. It is the use of the forearm to relieve the force of carrying to reduce the force exerted on the wrist.

- Work that requires regular use of the wrists requires proper posture to prevent injury.
